A Generic Hepatitis C Treatment Story: The Email Thread

A large part of my day is spent answering emails from people who are trying to find a reliable supplier of generic Hepatitis C medication.

Often, for good reason, these people are sceptical when I offer them medication at approximately 100th the normal retail price.

From the first email to the last I personally communicate with everyone who contacts me and support them through the various phases of their treatment experience.

There are many phases.

Some people write to me once or twice and then I never hear from them.

Other people get their treatment and our communication spans the 12 weeks of treatment and beyond.

I thought it would be interesting for people considering doing generic Hep C treatment to follow one of these conversation threads from beginning to end.

From initial sceptical enquiry, through waiting for delivery, through treatment and beyond.

I do understand your concerns about my site (and me) being genuine.

Two suggestions on that front.

On the matter of your treatment there is absolutely no need for you to travel to get the medication you need (unless you particularly want to).

I send four or five treatments to the USA every week and have been doing so for three years now without any problems.

Delivery is insured and guaranteed.

It is also possible that I may know a doctor in your part of the USA who will supervise your treatment.

So if you let me know what part of the USA you live in and also if you know which genotype of Hep C you have, then I can give you more information.

If you want to travel I would suggest India as Hep C meds in Thailand are all imported from India or Bangladesh.

First let me sincerely thank you for responding.  There is nothing more valuable than time, and you have given freely of yours.

I see we’re close in age.  Let me assure I have had the same feelings of hopelessness that others have expressed.  I do not know my genome type.

My second and last biopsy I will ever do was done in 2002, and it was then I said never again, and accepted I would die someday probably of liver cancer.

I first tested positive for HEP C in 1993, but suspect I may have had it for up to 15 years prior to that.

I attribute that to being young and dumb and exercising self destructive behavior.

I have been drug free and mostly alcohol free for over 30 years now.  I again started consuming a beer or two every now and then a couple of years ago.

I know its not good for the liver but I just got to the point where I said what the hell.

If I could get medicine sent to me here in the USA it would be a Godsend.

Currently I live in El Salvador, working on a US Government contract, and as such, have access to a US Postal Address here to.  But only through the US Postal Sysytem.

However, even though I work I could not afford the treatment costs in the USA as insurance companies here have turned their backs on HEP C patients.

This was why I was asking if you knew of anyone in Central America.

That being said, I can have the medicine sent here to my current address, if it comes via government postal systems, or I can have it sent to my residential address in the USA, which is in the State of ######, if it is sent via a commercial carrier.  I would just make a weekend flight back there to pick it up.  And if it has to be signed for that may be the best option.

As i do not know my genome type, and as there probably isn’t a place or lab here in El Salvador that tests for that, it would mean having to go back to the States to test.

Can you recommend a regiment that would work on any and all of the known genome types?  And is the entire however many week regiment shipped in one shipment?

Thanks for explaining your situation in more detail, it does help me with giving you some options.

Firstly, a beer or two is not a big issue though I would suggest giving that up for the duration of your treatment. The reason being that the liver will go through quite a profound healing process when the Hep C virus is removed and its best to let it have a clear run at that.

Once the virus is clear and the liver has stabilised then a beer or two is not an issue. I enjoy a glass or two of red wine a few times each week and my liver has gone from borderline cirrhosis (F3/F4) to being pretty much in perfect condition now.

The best treatment option if you do not know your genotype is to use Epclusa (Sofosbuvir 400 mg + Velpatasvir 100 mg) this is a treatment that will cure all genotypes.

I am attaching information on getting the generic version of that. When I say “generic” it is actually a clone… that is to say identical to Epclusa.

That would be a 12 week treatment… one pill per day for 84 days.

Please have a read through the attachment.

If you have access to the USPS then there is no problem at all sending to you. I have sent to US citizens in foreign countries by this method previously.

As stated, I haven’t had any testing done in over 15 years and no longer have the medical records.  I’ll see if I can get a local Doctor here to write a scipt.  I’ll work on getting that.  What exactly should the script be written for?

As I see you mostly use DHL or Fedex, I would want it sent to my home address in the USA and I would go there to pick it up.

What is your process to use a Credit Card?  PayPal?  If you need me to call you I can.

Please see attached Prescription.  Yes it is in Spanish, as I received it from my Doctor here in El Salvador, but it basically states Epclusa for 12 weeks one time a day.

I am calling the credit card company immediately after sending this.   I am telling them $1100.00, so please charge that to help cover fees and expenses.  If it is an amount more than that please let me know ASAP.   They may not ask.

The above billing address is my USA address here in El Salvador through the US mail system.

And they are not as reliable once its turned over.

Consequently I am asking that it is shipped, no matter what method of shipping is used, to my home in the United States and I will go there to retrieve it:

Once I have a tracking number, do you have any idea, give or take two or three days, when the package may arrive, based on past experience?  I ask so that i can make travel arrangements and shoot to be in the States for a week’s window, hoping the package’s arrival will coincide with that window.  If you could, please give an indication when you send the tracking number.

Of course, I know I could always wait until I know for sure it’s there and having waited all these years a week or two shouldn’t make a difference, but I am just very anxious to get started, as I want to be done with this virus.

EMS no longer has info on this shipment and when I call the EMS phone number for the USA it is a United States Post Office phone number, and all I get is voice mail.  It is apparently now tracking via the USPS.

I do understand it is frustrating but please be assured that in 3 years of sending these meds to the USA there has been 100% clearance rate through Customs and only one parcel has gone missing in that time, out of several thousand, and that one parcel appears to have been stolen during the delivery process. So your odds are pretty good

Just wanted to let you know I finally received the package today, after some hiccups.  I read through the documentation that came in the box of pills, and will begin my 84 day regiment very shortly (once I get some food),which should finish me up around October 9th.  That coincides with the next trip planned back to the States, at which time I’ll have a blood test done to see how it went.

Well, I finished my 84 day treatment this past Monday and was blood tested yesterday.  The doctor tells me that I am still showing positive for the virus.

I am very disheartened to say the least, and at a loss.

I am saying this because I believe you have not had the correct blood test. The reason I say this is that you need to have a VIRAL LOAD test  (Also known as an RNA test)  to confirm if you are still infected with Hep C. An RNA test usually takes at least 5 days to process. If you had the test yesterday and have the results today this means that you had a Hep C antibody test. You will ALWAYS be positive for Hep C antibodies. These antibodies are made by your own immune system and will always be present in your blood.

If you want to be sure you need to get a viral load test, this will cost you about $90.

I am back Stateside, having arrived here to coincide with the end of the treatment, so I could be tested here and not in El Salvador.  I did not think, or should I say I did not trust testing done in El Salvador, and at this point, based on your info, I doubt that even if they could test for the antibody, they could test for the viral load there.

Hence the return here to the USA.  I was scheduled to go back to El Salvador this coming Monday, but will extend as long as I have to in order to get a RNA test performed.

I will keep you appraised.

After reading the link you sent, I should have added that although the Doctor probably did only ask for an antibody test, he did ask for and I received a batch of liver function tests, all of which came back as my liver functioning properly with no adverse indications of liver malfunction.

His “diagnosis” (and he probably was unaware of the RNA test as he is my old family doctor whom I have seen since I was 6 years old, making him about 85 to 90) was that, yes you have the virus, but its asymptomatic. His advice was to live a relatively clean life and not to worry about it, as my liver, based on the liver function tests, appeared to be functioning properly.

Having said that I will still get the RNA test and hope for the best!

THE FINAL EMAIL

I went back to the States over the Holidays and had an RNA test conducted, as this was my first opportunity since completion of the regiment in October.

Today I received word that no virus was detected.  Wonderful news and I am sure you can relate to what I’m feeling.

First, I want to express my deepest and warmest Thanks to you personally.

Secondly, I made a vow to myself that if this treatment worked I would, as an expression of my gratitude, send you enough funds to treat someone else; not less deserving as all are, but someone or ones less fortunate.
